Character.AI is the biggest name in character chat, and for good reason: a massive library of user-created characters and one of the sharpest conversation models in the category, all on a genuinely generous free tier.
For the AI girlfriend use case specifically, it hits a wall. The content filter is strict, adult content is off the table, and there is no image generation. It is built for general-purpose roleplay and SFW companionship, not romance with adult range.

This is the strong suit. Character.AI's conversation is quick, coherent and characterful, and the sheer catalog means there is a character for almost anything SFW. On pure text it is a genuine leader.
